A high point of the sesquicentennial Palm Sunday confirmation reunion was honoring Ellen Herrmann for serving St. Paul's Church as organist for 47 years. The choir, directed by Donna Lowe, had a great time rehearsing and presenting to Ellen a specially commissioned anthem, by composer Joel Raney, God Watches Over You.

A note of gratitude
Well, you really did it! I haven't been that surprised in a long time. And what a surprise it was! Now I know why people stopped talking when I entered a room - and why I wasn't needed to help set up for the Confirmation dinner - and those questions about my favorite scripture passage and favorite choral composers. I was totally clueless about what was going on around here! That you all managed to keep me from finding out for all those months amazes me.
I am grateful for the opportunity you've given me to serve this congregation all these years. You've watched me grow from a little girl who could really sing loud into a teenager who could really sing loud and play the piano into a "getting up there in age" woman who still loves to sing really loud and play music, too.
I thank God for giving me parents both of whose families loved and played and sang music and passed that love on to their children, so that we could share that love with others. And I thank all of you for your very generous gift and for sharing your love with me by commissioning an anthem for me on the occasion of our 150th anniversary. I am honored.
With Love, Ellen |
